Yard Creek Provincial Park
Yard Creek Provincial Park
Yard Creek Provincial Park sits roughly halfway between Revelstoke and Sicamous BC, on the site of a WWII Japanese Internment Camp. There is nothing left of the internment camp, no artifacts, no buildings. All signs have been wiped off the map, and in its place are 5 km of hiking and ski trails, and 65 well-maintained and very private campsites. If you would like to know more about the Japanese Internment history, there is a link to an article that is well worth the read at the bottom of this page.
We took a walk around the campsites and they are very clean, with large sections of cedar and hemlock forest between them. At that time, there was a “boil water advisory.” Probably a good idea to take your own water for drinking and cooking.
We didn’t have time to check out the trails on the north side of the highway, but if the lovely hike along the creek on the south side of the highway is any indication, they will be well marked and well maintained. We followed a trail along Yard Creek from the parking lot of the day use area. Take the trail to the right, as the left goes into the campground.
Yard Creek empties into Eagle River, a spawning river for coho, chinook, sockeye and kokanee salmon. There are also Bull, Rainbow and Steelhead trout.
